Vibroacoustic Therapy

Healing with sound may be as old or older than the human voice. The cutting edge of sound healing can be experienced in Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy. One scientific approach to sound therapy began in World War II when the US Veterans hospitals began to use music to help treat soldiers returning from the war. In 1944, Michigan State University established the first music therapy degree program in the world. Today many hospitals offer sound therapy in their conventional treatment programs. In Germany, Vibroacoustic therapy is covered by health insurance.

Researchers have proven that the brain reacts to certain sounds and that you can actually train the brain to achieve optimum brainwave patterns with music with embedded sounds.

Benefits include:

• stress management
• reduced pain
• memory enhancement
• physical rehabilitation
• increased energy

In the 1980’s, a Norwegian researcher, Olav Skille, discovered that the physical vibrations of sound could relax and/or stimulate severely disabled children. Noting that bass frequencies had a particularly significant therapeutic effect, he combined music with a pulsed low frequency sine tone. (A Sine Tone is a pure harmonic, without upper partials.)

In his studies, he found that Vibracoustic Therapy was beneficial for a variety of medical conditions and symptoms including asthma, autism, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, constipation, insomnia, pain and Parkinson's Disease.

In the USA Butler (1997) studied patients undergoing open heart surgery, and found that the post-operative use of Vibroacoustic Therapy significantly reduced the time over which patients required respiration on a ventilator in the Coronary Care Unit. The overall length of hospital stay was decreased from 9 days to 5 days.
